FOLK TALES and FISH STORIES

by Kristoffer F. Paulson

NORWEGIAN GNOMES ARE NISSES

Fairy Tales are fairy tales, fish stories are fish stories, and the truth is the truth.

Norwegian gnomes are called Nisses, but they are not 15 centimeters high like the book of Gnomes tells you, and they do not wear long, pointed red hats. Fifteen centimeters may be all very well for the low countries of Holland and Flanders, but as every Norwegian schoolboy, or schoolgirl, knows, a full grown Norwegian Nisse stands between two and a half and three feet high, wears blue bib overalls buckled over a clean white shirt with silver buttons if he is rich and pewter if he is not. He cultivates a medium length white beard, tucks his pants' cuffs into shiny black boots and also wears a red stocking cap with a tassel.
